The modern Judas

The modern Judas

On Easter Sunday, Judas dolls are traditionally blown up in San Miguel de Allende. A dozen or so papier-mâché figures, now representing real-life “traitors” from recent history, first dangle above the assembled crowd in the town’s main square before being detonated one by one. When I attended the 2019 spectacle, the highlight of that day was the detonation of a blonde figure wearing a red tie, causing the crowd to cheer loudly. I was not surprised that the US president in power at the time was particularly unpopular in Mexico.
