Rings of Smoke

Rings of Smoke

The Indonesian island of Java is rich with volcanoes, the most popular by far is Bromo, a rather small but quite active crater in the middle of the Tengger massif. It is immediately recognizable by its broad plume of smoke, which makes it look ominous. Despite it’s high activity though, I was able to walk around the crater of Bromo on an impressive hiking trail along the narrow rim. I spent the days in the national park exploring several adventurous hikes through the giant crater of the caldera. Finally on my last day, I walked up to the popular viewpoint at sunrise, where I enjoyed a wonderful overview of the vast moon-like landscape. This was literally, the pinacle of my visit, as Gunung Semeru erupted in the distance every few minutes from its perfect volcanic cone.
