In Company with Fitz Roy

In Company with Fitz Roy

After hitchhiking down 1350km along Carretera Austral through Chilean Patagonia, there was not a road from the small village of Villa o’Higgins leading further south into the country. The Campo de Hielo Sur, a huge expanse of glacial ice, made it impossible to continue by car. Since I had no intention of turning back, I traveled with four other travelers by boat across the long Lago o’Higgins, from whose southern shore after a two days’ walk we reached the small Argentine town of El Chalten. On the way through the almost untouched wilderness, we almost constantly had breathtaking views of Fitz Roy, considered the most beautiful mountain in Patagonia.
