Hearty Skewers

Hearty Skewers

Eating at street stalls is one of my favorite activities on my world travels. Here, the food is often fresher, more authentic and tastier than in the restaurant around the corner, and you can see exactly what you’re getting beforehand. On a village street of Isla Taquile in the middle of Lake Titicaca, I was drawn to the smell of freshly grilled anticuchos – skewers of alpaca meat. I was amazed at how tasty and tender the meat was, and enjoyed every bite of the local street snack. Fortunately, it wasn’t until after my meal that I learned that anticuchos are made from animal hearts. Until then, I had always given food made from offal a wide berth.
