Whaling village

Whaling village

In a remote fishing village on the Indonesian island of Lembata, the inhabitants have been subsisting on whaling for over 6 centuries. Prior to my trip through Asia, I read about the place and it’s people who are possibly the last to hunt marine mammals in their traditional way with the simplest harpoons made of bamboo. Fascinated by this idea, I decided to include a stop at the special location on my exploration through the Indonesian archipelago. With my own eyes I wanted to see how people live and survive there. Upon arrival, I was taken by a friendly villager to a small homestay on a cliff high above the village. Up there, I enjoyed the wonderful view while bursting with curiosity about what I would experience over the next two days.
